Egg freezing cost in Canada in 2026: provincial coverage, major clinics, and US comparison
Provincial coverage
Ontario
The Ontario Fertility Programme funds one IVF cycle per patient lifetime including egg retrieval, but does not cover elective egg freezing for age-related fertility preservation. Stimulation medications are not covered by the OFP and are typically paid out of pocket. Patients can receive medically necessary egg freezing through provincial-funded pathways subject to clinical eligibility.
Quebec
Quebec re-introduced public coverage of fertility treatment in 2021 (Bill 73). The programme covers a partial cycle of IVF and includes some preservation-adjacent services. Specific egg freezing coverage details depend on the clinical indication.
British Columbia
BC does not provide public funding for elective egg freezing. The province has signalled intentions to introduce IVF funding but no formal egg freezing programme as of April 2026. Treatment is private-pay or employer-benefit funded.
Alberta
Alberta does not provide public funding for elective egg freezing. Some private employer benefit plans include fertility coverage. Major clinics in Calgary and Edmonton publish private-pay pricing.
Major Canadian clinic pricing
- TRIO Fertility (Toronto). CAD $8,000 to $10,000 per cycle, plus meds.
- Mount Sinai Fertility (Toronto). CAD $8,000 to $10,000 per cycle.
- Ottawa Fertility Centre. CAD $7,500 to $9,500 per cycle.
- Olive Fertility Centre (Vancouver). CAD $9,000 to $11,000 per cycle.
- Genesis Fertility Centre (Vancouver). CAD $8,500 to $10,500 per cycle.
- Astra Fertility (Calgary). CAD $7,500 to $9,500 per cycle.
Pricing aggregated from clinic public pricing pages, last verified April 2026. Stimulation medications add CAD $3,000 to $6,000.
Comparison with the US
Canadian pricing is meaningfully cheaper than the US, particularly for patients in northern US states with proximity to a Canadian clinic. The cross-border calculation includes:
- Exchange rate (CAD to USD)
- Travel cost for both initial consultation and the retrieval cycle
- Time off work plus accommodation
- Records continuity and follow-up considerations if a complication occurs back in the US
- Cross-border egg storage logistics and shipping costs if eggs are eventually transported back to the US
For US patients within driving distance of Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver, the cross-border option can save USD $5,000 to $10,000 net. For US patients further inland, the math is tighter and often does not justify the trip.
Regulation
Canadian fertility clinics operate under the federal Assisted Human Reproduction Act (AHRA) framework, with provincial regulation of clinical practice and physician licensing. The AHRA requires informed consent, prohibits commercial surrogacy, and regulates donor egg and sperm. Egg freezing for personal use is permitted across all provinces.
